HAZMAT Surveys

The hazardous materials survey process

Hazardous materials are defined as substances in a building or area that could threaten people’s health and safety. They might be present because of the building’s construction, what it’s used for, what is stored there, or because waste has been tipped there. Our hazardous materials survey services identify the problem, quantify it, and recommend the right action.

Get a professional HAZMAT survey

We analyse suspected hazardous materials at our own Laboratory, using a number of methods including GC-MS, FTIR, ICP-OES and Scanning Electron Microscopy. The hazmat assessment report we provide details everything you need to know about the contamination and its extent, plus safe remedial actions and disposal methods.

What’s involved in an environmental building survey?

We carefully take samples of the dangerous materials, then analyse them to confirm the presence or absence of chemical and biological hazards. We also make note of any suspicious-looking materials that need to be identified. The details behind exactly what we will do depend on the site, the type of building, the way it has been built, accessibility and more. We might need to get inside various parts of the building’s structure to inspect and sample all the hazards.

Answers to your hazardous materials survey questions

Where can you get information about a hazardous substance?

The UK government provides detailed information about hazardous substances. It also provides a list of hazardous substances and controlled quantities, created in accordance with Schedule 1 of the Planning (Hazardous Substances) Regulations 1992.

What are the hazardous substances?

There’s a long list of hazardous substances, detailed in a document created by the UK government as mentioned in the last question. It includes chemicals, paints, oils, different sorts of dangerous dust, debris, and discarded medical supplies like hypodermic syringes. Man Made Mineral Fibre in insulation is a hazard, as are stagnant water, leaking pipes, water left in tanks and water systems.

It covers lead and lead oxides in paint, and cadmium and chromium in paints, plus heavy metals. Plus Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) – transformer oils, capacitors, oil filled cables. The list contains biohazards like moulds, fungi, sewage, and airborne bacteria, as well as anthrax found in animal by-products used to make plaster and insulation. Last but not least, hazmat assessment includes asbestos.

Where can hazardous substances be found?

A hazmat survey can identify hazardous substances inside buildings, within the construction of buildings, and in the materials buildings are made of. They can also leach into the ground or cause a hazard outdoors. Cleaning products, bleach and paint are some of the most common, found in everyday settings like hair salons, workshops, and factories.
