WAC Testing & Land Remediation

Do you need waste acceptance criteria testing?

Waste Acceptance Criteria testing or WAC testing is a process you go through to carefully assess the risks from waste materials when they’re due to go to a landfill site. First, the substance is tested to see whether it’s hazardous or not, then it is WAC tested. The tests, including specialist asbestos waste acceptance criteria, involve expert laboratory analysis of the potential leachate, the liquid that leaks from landfill sites. The test results reveal the best disposal methods.

What are the waste acceptance criteria limits?

You can’t dispose of waste in a landfill unless it meets the right Waste Acceptance Criteria for the specific type of landfill and the type of waste. Waste acceptance criteria limits are intended to avoid polluting the groundwater. The EU Council Decision 2003/33/EC set out the official criteria for the acceptance of such waste, splitting it into inert, non-hazardous, and hazardous waste. There are no WAC limits for non-hazardous waste. We’ll be pleased to help you get it right first time, every time with expert waste acceptance criteria WAC testing.

The different waste acceptance criteria for landfill

There are different WAC for inert, non-hazardous waste, and hazardous waste. Landfills for inert waste can only take inert waste meeting the relevant WAC. Landfills for non-hazardous waste can take municipal waste, other non-hazardous waste fulfilling the relevant WAC, and stable, non-reactive wastes under some circumstances, as long as they’re not deposited along with biodegradable non-hazardous waste. And landfills for hazardous waste can only take waste that has been classified as hazardous.

Answers to your waste acceptance criteria for landfill questions

What is a WAC test?

Put simply, a WAC test tells you which landfill site you’re allowed to send your waste to.

How many WAC tests do I need?

There are two tests to carry out. The first, the Waste Classification Test, classifies the kind of waste you’re looking at. Then you send the waste to undergo a WAC Test. Together the two tests give you all the information needed by a landfill operator. Every time you have waste to dispose of in landfill, you’ll need to test it first.

When is WAC testing required?

Waste Acceptance Criteria testing is done once your waste has been pre-characterised as hazardous via a Waste Classification Test. WAC testing is also used when non-hazardous waste is considered to be inert, to check whether it might be possible to dispose of it in an inert landfill site. As the producer of the waste, it’s your legal duty of care to carry out the characterisation and see if it’s hazardous or not. We carry out the WAC testing side of things.
