Legionella

What you need to know about legionella testing

Legionella bacteria live naturally in fresh water. If they grow in man-made water systems, for example inside buildings, they can cause disease. People can catch it from breathing in tiny droplets of water, or accidentally taking contaminated water into their lungs. The symptoms are a pneumonia-like fever, cough, chills, and aching muscles. Most healthy people don’t get ill, but it can kill vulnerable people.

Legionella risk assessment health facts

Most healthy people exposed to Legionella don’t fall ill. Some of us are at more risk, for example those aged over 50, current or ex-smokers, those with a chronic lung disease like emphysema and people with compromised immune systems, for example through illness or after a transplant or chemotherapy. Underlying diseases like cancer, diabetes, kidney failure, and liver failure also put people at extra risk. As an employee that potentially welcomes visitors, suppliers and customers on site, you need to keep everyone safe.

Answers to your legionella risk assessment questions

Where is legionella found?

Legionella is present in almost every natural water system, including rivers, lakes and streams. But the levels are usually too low to be a problem. When it gets into man-made water systems, it can be a different story. A build up of biofilm in pipes and other systems causes the bacteria to grow and spread, along with other pathogens. If the water temperature is between 20–45°C, the conditions are ideal for legionella to thrive.

What causes legionella in water?

What is a legionella test?
