Bulk Sample Analysis Is The Process Of Identifying The Six Regulated Types Of Asbestos Using Polarised Light Microscopy, PLM.

You don’t need an asbestos licence to take samples

If a chunk of suspect material has already broken off, you can take a sample yourself as long as there is no risk of spreading debris or exposing yourself to dust. Here’s how the UK’s Health and Safety Executive advises you carry out asbestos sampling:
  • Watch where you walk – it’s best not to spread dust or pieces of material around
  • Dampen the sample – this helps stop dust escaping
  • Place it in a self-sealing polythene bag – so dust and particles can’t escape
  • Put this in a second self-sealing bag – just to be doubly safe
  • Label it – so everyone knows what’s in the bag. Also include the source, your contact details, and the destination.

Answers to your asbestos bulk identification queries

What is Bulk Identification?

Bulk Identification is the process we use to find out if the material sampled from your site contains asbestos.

How do you analyse for Asbestos content?

We use specialist equipment, including polarised light microscopy and various pre-treatment techniques, to find out if the material contains asbestos

How do I know the results are accurate?

The methods we use and the requirements we have to meet are laid down by the UK Health and Safety Executive (HSE) under HSG248, then checked and approved by UKAS, the UK’s National Accreditation Body.

How do we report the results?

Our reports give details about the material and whether asbestos is present. We can’t provide information about the amount of asbestos in the material, simply because it isn’t permitted by HSE.

Will the report reveal what type of asbestos is present?

Yes, there are six types of asbestos minerals, and our report will clearly state which of them we have found.

Will the certificate recommend removal?

Bulk identification, and the certificate you receive, are all about the analysis stage. The other details, including the condition of the material and any removals required, come in a separate report written after we’ve made a detailed survey.

How quickly can I get the results?

The speed of the results depends on the quality of the samples, the materials sampled, and the workload at the lab. We can perform an express analysis within 24 hours of getting your sample as long as the sample is good enough and the lab has the capacity.
