Lead Testing and Surveys

A lead paint survey can save lives – Here’s how

Lead is still common in older buildings. It turns up in paint, roofing materials and pipework. Disturbing it can cause hazardous lead dust, fumes and vapours to spread. It’s important to find it, safely contain it, and remove it, because lead can cause serious health problems. It’s a factor in anaemia, brain damage, infertility and kidney disease, and may also have a role in some occupational cancers. That’s why a lead paint assessment can save lives.

Answers to your lead paint survey questions

Is lead testing mandatory?

Yes. The Control of Lead at Work Regulations 2002 (CLAW) mean there’s a legal duty on employers to prevent, or where it isn’t possible, control your employees’ exposure to lead.

When is lead paint testing required?

Lead paint testing might be needed when you’re going to do anything that could disturb the surface of a painted area that’s old enough to contain lead. Lead pigments were widely used in domestic and commercial paints until the 1960s, and weren’t taken out of some common paints until the 1980s. If the paintwork could be that old or older, you’ll benefit from lead paint analysis.
