Independent hazardous materials consultancy and contaminated land support, helping developers, contractors, and local authorities manage risk, maintain compliance, and deliver projects safely.

HFS Environmental provides independent land remediation consultancy and contaminated land support for developers, contractors, local authorities, and remediation specialists. Whether your project involves demolition, excavation, waste classification, or full environmental remediation, our consultants deliver the practical expertise, clear reporting, and responsive communication needed to keep works on programme and fully compliant.
As a family-run, independent consultancy established in 2004, we have no commercial interest in the outcome of testing or remediation, only in giving you accurate, impartial advice you can act on with confidence.
Put simply, a WAC test tells you which landfill site you’re allowed to send your waste to.
There are two tests to carry out. The first, the Waste Classification Test, classifies the kind of waste you’re looking at. Then you send the waste to undergo a WAC Test. Together the two tests give you all the information needed by a landfill operator. Every time you have waste to dispose of in landfill, you’ll need to test it first.
Waste Acceptance Criteria testing is done once your waste has been pre-characterised as hazardous via a Waste Classification Test. WAC testing is also used when non-hazardous waste is considered to be inert, to check whether it might be possible to dispose of it in an inert landfill site. As the producer of the waste, it’s your legal duty of care to carry out the characterisation and see if it’s hazardous or not. We carry out the WAC testing side of things.
